Roongroj Piamyotsak

An uncommon artist

Story : C. Karnkaew, Chiangmai Home Catalog, No.03

Roongroj Piamyotsak, 40, the professional artist who always wears black clothe following traditional northern identity.
For several years, his art works have been widely adopted among the art lovers but sadly that we didn't find any stories about hi published in any magazine.

Anytime when I was talking with him, it seemed difficult for me to understand the view-points, that was a bi difference being taught by the others.
The uncommon artist who escaped the hustle and bustle by practicall following up the Buddhist principles by living alone in a simple house with a few pieces of furniture.
Here's th interview to make on the art exhibition at Wat Phro Buddhobath Tak Pho.

Are the btack dollies the costur-rie for the ar,tist '?
(Softly laughing) Not just for fashion, it's a casual wear that gives me a comfortable feeling when I work. I wore the same color for ten years.

Why have not many artists visited the exhibition ?
The art-exhibition is organized for the local people, not for general artists. I created the Public-arts for the locals to understand the traditional activities that were very close to their lives and hearts.
The picture of the relic ritual ceremony is a good example of the Buddhistic-Art that bridged the people to Buddhism.
Furthermore the art exhibition offers an opportunity for the local people to see freely performances of the basics of arts such as acting, singing and cooking.

Did you confirm a saying that you're not turning back to art in our local area ?
Sad to know that the most of artistic works has been created for business, it's made for the people who have no idea about the art, just for selling.
The real artist should have a responsibility to create the fine arts for the public. I want to work for the local people in an unchained condition.
If you are standing at the outside you can see clearly, what's happening on the insider

Could vou tell me about yourself ?
I was called 'Sa-La'(in the northern dialect means artisan) by the people in San Patong district of Chiang Mai province where I was born.
I graduated from Silpokorn University in the faculty of Fine Arts. After that I spent many years, learning local arts such as the art of woodcarving at Ban Thawai.
I have the feel and sense of it, I still feel my learning experience is never ending. I'm highly experienced in applying the arts to be used in antique design such as painting or with the woodcarvi'ngs.

Your art works at the beginning on the exhibition are not the Buddhistic works.
At that time I was a teenager, my work is mainly reflecting the experience of life. It tells about the beauty of women in the form of northern local life.
The softly moving form of the modern art matched with the architecture of Lanno house, which leave more space to the composition.

I heard you faced a hard time in your life so the Buddhistic Arts happen at this situation.
Buddhism plays a significant role in the daily role of my life when I suffered a serious sickness from an operation in a hospital.
At the time I was suffering to hear peoples painful screaming and crying, they reminded me of the circle of life in the Buddhist truth.
During treatment of the sickness I spend the time reading Buddhist lessons, writing a book and studying the mural paintings of the temples.
Afterwards I became to understand the meaning of life and I used the Buddhism as my guideline for working in arts.
So my experience has been presented via the arts in the last 7-8 years.

Will your Buddhistic-Arts exhibition be your last work ?
The Buddhist Arts emphasis to encourage the local people to participate in various atmospheres according to the Psychological-Buddhist works.
Indeed, it's difficult to bring the art directly to the local people because they have no basics of art.
For the exhibition promoting the Buddhism to the people, it works! They learn the Buddhist-Arts through the multi-media including activities as well.
