Thawan Dachanee : National Artist for Art (Painting) 2001




Thai Arts and Culture could be inherited and survived until the present time because our country still have artists who still create their artistic works and are aware of the importance of these things. The beauty of arts or the safeguard of cultural works of all kind, have created the Thai Identity and in order to elevate and enhence the various artist, the office of the National culture committee has collected the works of the National Artists and the outstanding cultural work creators for the benefit of study, rosourch and knowledge of general public.

And this year ,the artist Thawan Dachanee, 62 years old who won an Arts and Culture prize from Japan's Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize Committee and was made a National Artist by the Office of the National Culture Commission of year 2001.


Thawan was among the first group of Silpakorn artists to introduce Western styles and techniques into Thai In the past two decades, the artist has established a folk museum in Ban Kham Doi Nang Lae in Chiang Rai.
The museum, spread over 100 rai, showcases 25 northern-style Thai houses and a vast folk art collection.

In 1996, he also set up a 12-million-baht scholarship fund, Thawan Dachanee, to enable students to attend various art institutions.
