International Triennale of Contemporary Art
YOKOHAMA 2001
"Mega-Wave........Towards a New Synthesis"
September 2nd-November 11th, 2001
YOKOHAMA 2001 is the nation's first large-scale international
art show to be held triennially. For the inaugural show, more
than 100 artists from around the globe will present site-specific
works in the Minato Mirai 21 development bay area to celebrate
the new millennium. Not just focusing on the field of art, the
works on exhibit will cover a broad range of fields from fashion,
architecture, science and technology to literature, philosophy,
and other areas of art. The exhibition's theme MEGA-WAVE-Towards
a New Synthesis, indicates the aim of developing a new and more
comprehensive vision of art for the future.
The city of Yokohama is Japan's second largest city, with a population
of more than 3 million. Yokohama opened its port to foreign trade
in 1859 after about 200 years of isolation from other countries,
and is today the country's largest port. Because the city opened
its doors to international visitors much earlier than other cities
in the country, its landscape and urban layout may give impressions
of a mixed atmosphere of Western and Asian tastes.
A variety of symposiums, workshops, and other events will be
held in conjunction with the exhibition, creating forums in which
artists, art lovers and the general public can meet in a festive
atmosphere to conduct a meaning ful dalogue. Most artists will
create bew works at the site. Visitors can see and feel the cutting
edge of contemporary art here in Yokohama.
And this year there is Thai artist who joins with this
exhibition. Navin Rawanchaikul is one of contemporary thai artists.
His concept of his works is
