Questions regarding the ideal of white, clean, and high-quality rice and the journey of the grains we consume every day lead to the latest series of works by Kanokwan Sutthang.
In the exhibition “Weevils in Rice”, the weevil, a member of the snout beetle family whose Thai name phonetically echoes the word for extinction, is positioned as the main protagonist. Through this figure, the work questions rice production processes, methods of cleaning and exclusion, the standards of whiteness, and the friction between the natural and the industrial. Although it is a natural inhabitant of rice, the weevil is perceived by humans as a disruptive agent that unsettles systemic procedures and challenges our preoccupation with cleanliness and the desire for flawless, industrial purity.
ข้อสงสัยเกี่ยวกับอุดมคติของข้าว ขาว สะอาด มีคุณภาพ ข้าวที่เราบริโภคอยู่ทุกวันนั้นผ่านอะไรมาบ้าง นำไปสู่ผลงานชุดล่าสุดของ กนกวรรณ สุทธัง ในนิทรรศการ มอด มอด ที่หยิบยกเรื่องราวของ “มอด” แมลงในตระกูลด้วงงวง ที่แม้แต่ชื่อก็คล้องจองกับการมอดม้วยดับสลาย มาเป็นตัวละครหลัก เพื่อตั้งคำถามกับกระบวนการผลิตข้าว การทำความสะอาด และขจัดออก มาตรฐานของความขาว และจุดขัดแย้งระหว่างสิ่งที่เป็นธรรมชาติ-อุตสาหกรรม โดยมี มอด ที่แม้จะเป็นแมลงที่อาศัยอยู่ในข้าวอยู่แล้ว แต่ในสายตามนุษย์กลับกลายเป็นตัวการที่สร้างความปั่นป่วน ก่อกวนระบบขั้นตอน และท้าทายความหมกมุ่นของมนุษย์กับความสะอาด กับความหวังในการบริโภคสิ่งที่ไร้ที่ติ หรือความบริสุทธิ์แบบอุตสาหกรรมสร้าง
